A Confession

The breeze was swishing through
Her soft silky tresses.
Seeping into and out of
Her body, soul and spirit.
And she stared blankly—
Out of the cheap and noisy,
Green and yellow matchbox
Of a vehicle, into the busy muddy
jam-packed black river of the land.
She kept staring,
Steady and blank.

“I can’t see you anymore” he had blurted
Over one heated phone call;
“I’ve had enough”, he had declared.
“I have told you and explained to you
And tried everything else, but you
Won’t understand. So I’ve just had it.”
And he had disconnected.
Severing all the words, the promises,
The memories— in one stony click.
And all she could do was
Keep staring blankly.

That was eight months ago.
Now she had moved on.
She had learned to laugh—
However much it pierced her.
She had learned to smile
For her family,
For her friends,
For herself.
She had wiped off those memories,
Like she had wiped off those tears.
She had clenched her fists and jaws and teeth,
And moved on.

And then comes today.
She saw him,
Buying movie-tickets,
With his new found love.
And she stared at him—
Blank and steady,
Steady and blank.
He saw her as well, but
O! Wasn’t he smarter!
He just looked through her—
Such a windy glance!
Right through her
Body, soul and spirit!
And he moved on, a possessive arm
Wrapped around his.

It was all a flurry of blurry—
A misty lump of dump...
All she remembered was
Her straight stare— steady and blank.
And she was now buzzing through
The busy muddy jam-packed
Black river of the land.

She had not said a word even then,
She had not said a word even now,
And yet she knew,
That she had made a confession,
Through her steady, blank stare.

  1. Nice one.
Just a question to you, didn't she have any fault of her when he decided to leave her and move on?

  2. lack of adjustments, lack of compromises, or lack of interest... there can be so many faults... but the question is not about that, rather, whether moving on is really so easy.
    think about it!

  5. @ megha- yes... i agree... time is the best healer... it's just i feel confused with the quantity that is needed for the complete cure.

  6. @ abhi- well the stare's just a tanglible expression of shock, bewilderment, sheer numbness.

  7. Sometimes, things aren't fair and square; You can survive a gunshot wound, but not a stare. Once beloved, one who cared; Moments that were sprayed, will be gradually frayed. Alas! The memories might linger, bruise you bad with it's rough fingers.

  8. A good poem. But needs a bit of polish. Some rough edges are still there. You have used the "stare" very well. The blankness can be openly interpreted. About the blame part as people have been discussing, I think it is pointless. Make your character speak a bit less. Keep it a bit vague and open. Then it could be a wonderful subject to discuss. The character is really powerful though. A very good attempt. I never knew you could write poetry. I am proud of you. Keep it up.

  10. @ black pirate- thank u. rough edges... perhaps because it was of some 'smooth and silky' times roughly reminded! and in my opinion, the character had to speak, to assert herself- through her silence; but again, opinions differ. and about the blame-game, i agree with u, though i don't disagree with the others, bcoz after all its my achievement if my piece makes someone think and imagine.
so thank u again, and i wud b happier if u unveil ur name... :)
